m.i.x.s.p.a.c.e.s. recap

My favorite mixspaces exchange was with a "brother" named What's In The Bag.

In August of 2005, he sent me
Melancholy: Three Day Weekend

and I sent him

fogged

I found out today that he lives in the next town over from me now. Saves postage if he is interested in making new trades.

April 2007

I made a mix exchange through MySpace, which I haven't tried in a very long time.
Pinky wanted to know if I'd make an exchange, so we exchanged pre-fab mixes.
She received a new mix called

March 2007

My March mixes went out to jimcat in Scotland.

She wrote, "As promised, here are the tracklists for the two mixes sent by the wonderful derhay

The first mix is music featured in, or sounding like it ought to be featured in “The Black Donnellys” (which I haven’t seen, but am now intrigued by!)
March Donnellys

1. Beirut – Scenic World
2. Nick Drake – Horn
3. Andain – Beautiful Things
4. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club – Mercy
5. Butterfly Boucher – A Walk Outside
6. Tom Waits – Gun Street Girl

19. The Greenhornes – Hard Times
20. The Ordinary Boys – Boys Will Be Boys
21. Donna Germano – King of the Fairies
22. Doves – Caught By the River

The second mix had a very clever theme – all the songs are the exact same length. Which might possibly correspond to derhay’s birthday, judging by the hints he dropped – Happy Birthday for a week past Sunday, derhay!
III XVIII

1. The Beach Boys – I Know There’s an Answer
2. Blondie – Pretty Baby

3. Boxcar Racers – There Is

21. The Sundays – Another Flavour
22. Tones on Tail – War
23. Van Morrison – The Way Young Lovers Do
24. XTC – Fly on the Wall

Both mixes made a very good soundtrack to my weekend of Ikea furniture building and front room rearranging, but that also meant that I haven’t given them my full attention yet. The tracks I’ve bolded were the ones that really stood out on first listen, but I expect I’d bold more after a more relaxing 2nd go! Thanks again, derhay!

(And BTW, your surname is my mum’s maiden name. We’re practically family!)"

I was very happy to know I didn't offend her Scots sensibilities with a pseudo-Celt mix.

I received my March mix from baggylettuce

4. Momus - "Vogue Bambini"

I sent two to Cassie and she wrote, "I received two mixes from derhay on Thursday that were almost entirely New To Me. There are a number of songs here that I fully intend to steal and put on mixes of my own.
Find Yourself A Comfortable Chair

1. Karlenken Vantar - Kent - (This has a great opening that really works to kicks off a mix.)
2. Love Will Tear Us Apart - Worm Is Green - (I grew to like this. I think it's a surprisingly versatile song.)
3. The Only Living Boy Around - American Analog Set
4. We're So Cool - The Au Pairs - (LOVVVVE this.)
5. Elephant Woman - Blonde Redhead
6. Banshee Beat - Animal Collective - (Gorgeous "slow build" song. Everything I've heard about Animal Collective suggested that they were a bit too "out there" for me. But I really like this. Is this them at their most accessible?)
7. Bicycle - The Autumns
8. My Diamond Star Car - Deerhoof - (I've read a lot of good things about this band, but I found this very annoying. My only "skip" on either mix.)
9. Beachcoma - Blur
10. The Lodger - David Byrne - (Is this what David Byrne sounds like now?)
11. Assessment (C Swing's Bootleg mix) - The Beta Band
12. When Prince Was a Kid - Jonathan Fire*Eater
13. Tiger Lily - The Bluetones
14. Ironspy - Splashdown
15. Vapour Trail - Ride
16. Sooner - Asobi Seksu
17. Live Wire - The Beastie Boys
18. Ruby Tuesday - Franco Battiato
19. The Day - Lisa Germano
20. The Coffee and Tea Wrecks - The Dandy Warhols - (They sound totally different here than in the "Veronica Mars" theme, my only prior exposure.)

Oh, I'm Not With These Guys: A very special blossom Collaboration/Guest Vocals Mix
Really enjoyed this one. You can consider the first 19 tracks bolded, because it all played very cohesively. But I will bold my particular favorites.
1. Gang of Four - I Love a Man in Uniform (Yeah Yeah Yeahs remix) - (Aw. This one is really cool. I'm not familiar with the original — what constitutes the remix? Is that Karen O singing?)
2. The Strokes w. Regina Spektor - Modern Girls and Old Fashioned Men - (I've got a real weakness for male/female combos.)
3. Spahn Ranch w. Vylette - Dreaming - (Very inventive cover.)
4. The Greenhornes w. Holly Golightly - There Is an End - (Only know her from that White Stripes song. She's nice and sultry here.)
5. Sigmatropic and Lee Renaldo - Haiku Twelve
6. Blonde Redhead ft. David Sylvian - Messenger
7. DJ Krush ft. Esthero - Final Home
8. Iggy Pop w. Kate Pierson - Candy - (Squee!!! I loved this song when it came out, and haven't heard it since.)
9. Sonic Youth w. Kim Deal - Little Trouble Girl - (Summit of the cool Kims!)
10. Basement Jaxx ft. Siouxsie Sioux - Cish Cash - (Totally infectious.)
11. The Herbaliser ft. Cappo - Failure's No Option
12. The Streets w. The Futureheads - Fit But You Know It
13. The Brian Jonestown Massacre ft. Sarabeth Tuceek - Seer
14. New Order ft. Billy Corgan - Turn My Way

18. Handsome Boy Modeling School ft. Jack Johnson - Breakdown
19. OP8 ft. Lisa Germano - Tom, Dick and Harry
20. Roy Orbison and k.d. lang - Crying - (I know that both of these artists are very talented, but this is Not My Sort Of Thing.)

Bossy Pants

03. Ring the Alarm – Tenor Saw
04. Don’t Hold Your Breath – Calla
05. Be My Wife – David Bowie (love Bowie)

07. Stay Away From My Johnny – Freda Gray & the Rocketeers (love)
08. Hang ‘em High – Hackie Mittoo
09. Sit Down – James
10. Give Me Daughters – Jonathan Fire Eater (interesting and weird, yet still less offensive than that horrible Daughters song by John Mayer)
11. Take It Easy My Brother Charles – Jorge Ben (not crazy about it at first, but I listened again today in a fit of murderous rage and it actually helped me "take it easy")
12. Shake – Otis Redding

15. Sifl & Olly meet the Tooth Fairy
16. Hands Off, She’s Mine – English Beat (it's like I'm 16 again)
17. Echoes of Deaf Journalists – Robotiks
18. Play It Cool – Super Furry Animals
19. Get Off Of My Cloud – The Flying Pickets (cute, but I think I only feel that way because of their accents, throw in a general North American accent and I'd probably be mildly annoyed)
20. Throw Away Your Television – Red Hot Chili Peppers (one of my fave RCHP songs)
21. Spin It On – Wings
22. Stay Up Late – Talking Heads
23. Prove My Love – Violent Femmes
24. Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood – Nina Simone
25. Open Up Your Heart and Let the Sunshine In – Frente!
26. Johnny Depp
27. Say Hello To the Angels - Interpol

A great mix. I have to say the little clips were probably lost on me as I am very out of the loop when it comes to pop culture. For example, I know who Johnny Depp is but was that him or someone talking about him or what, I have no idea?

The second mix had no title, only symbols, so I have christened it....
The Disc Previously Known As Prince

01. Love Is All Around – Joan Jett & the Blackhearts (the best thing about the Mary Tyler Moore show was always the theme song)
02. Nothing Stays the Same – Elastica

I sent her a Christmas mix and she had this to write about it:
"Just finished listening to another awesome Christmas mix...this one from the lovely derhay! Fabulous, fabulous, and it goes a little something like this....

Christmas 2005

"Christmas Time" Bill Cosby
(every time I hear or hear of Bill Cosby I imagine Jack Black deriding John Cusack in 'High Fidelity' with the words "That? Is a Cosby sweater. A Cosssby. Sweater." So, hee.)
"Jingle Bell Rock" by Bobby Helms
(Classic, and also reminds me of 'Mean Girls' now also. And yes, I do want my pink shirt back. I want my pink short back!)
"Let It Snow!" by Dean Martin
(Such a classic - trust me, windy English weather, Christmas card writing and Deano blaring is a heady mix. I had to have a Scotch in order to honour the big guy too...so excuse me any stumblings / ramblings etc.)
"The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late)"
(Brilliant. Just brilliant. Also amused me no end when I called my sister and randomly played this down the phone to her, with me cackling in the background. We loved the chipmunks when we were wee!)
"2000 Miles" the Pretenders
"Here Comes Santa Claus" Bing Crosby and the Andrews Sisters
"Just Like Christmas" Low
(Who are/is Low? This is good!)
"Peace On Earth / Little Drummer Boy" Bing and Dave
(I love this song - it works on so many surreal levels!)
"O Holy Night" Nat 'King' Cole
(O Holy Yes! I looooove this song so much and it rarely gets played over here. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful)
"A Wonderful Christmas Time" Wings
"Christmas Time Is Here" Stone Temple Pilots
"Edward Meets The World: Ice Dance" Danny Elfman
(I adore Danny Elfman - he is one of my favourite composers for film....ever. And this is just beautiful, evocative, all that good stuff!)
"Skating on the River" Lily Frost
(I love this track. Cute and cosy and lovely. I feel I am running out of superlatives now...)
"Winter Wonderland" The Cocteau Twins
(Trippy, ethereal and fab)
"Song For A Winter's Night" Sarah McLachlan
(Just gorgeously solemn and beautiful. I want to be one of Sarah's backing singers)
"Fortune Presents Gifts Not According To The Book" Dead Can Dance
(Wow. Showstopping. What. A. Song. Love it.)
"Give Me The Simple Life" J.J.Johnson and Kai Winding
(Nice bouncy instrumental...makes me want to sip a cocktail and dance with a Tom Hanks lookalike. Is that wrong?)
"Rocking Around The Christmas Tree" Brenda Lee
(I remember my mum doing the most awesomely baaaad dance to this when I was wee...brings back many a happy memory)
"White Christmas" The Drifters
(I love the Oh-oh-oh-oh-oooooh bit!)
"Father Christmas" The Kinks
(This is so cool - I can't believe I'd never heard this before!)
"Christmas Wrapping" The Waitresses
(currently holds joint first place in my heart as far as Christmas songs go (the other one being 'Fairytale of New York') so you had me from hello on this one :-))
"Von" Sigur Ros
"Skating" Vince Guaraldi Trio
"Comfort and Joy" Simon and Garfunkel
(Lovely and traditional, good all round)
"Christmas Time Is Here Again" The Beatles
(Great closer! I love the spoken ad libs)

Awesome mix, derhay! I love it! Thank you soooo much."

I sent Mike Eternity two mixes. He wrote about the first:

"At last, the aforementioned derhay mix(es). First one is Your Party and Your List. Impeccable artwork, as I said, very professional-looking, with the songs chosen around the theme of party plans, so it's divided into sections.

1) Do's and Don'ts / Gomez
Where: 2) Here and There / Homunculus
How: 3) Nice and Sleazy / The Stranglers
When: 4) All Day and All of the Night / The Kinks
'Til They: 5) Shiver and Shake / The Cure

Don't Forget to Invite
6) Venus and Serena / Super Furry Animals
7) Aaron and Maria / American Analog Set
8) Mephisto and Kevin / Primus (at first I thought this song was really annoying me, until I realized it was actually love at first sight)
9) Punch and Judy / XTC
10) Johnny and Mary / Placebo

Guests are to Bring
11) Title and Registration / Death Cab for Cutie (one of my faves by them)
12) Pasties and a G-String / Tom Waits
13) Coffee and T.V. / Blur

Party Favors
14) Red Eyes and Tears / Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
15) Plastic and Whores / Hint Hint
16) Buttons and Zips / Elbow
17) Wires and Waves / Rilo Kiley

The Entertainment
18) The Donkey and the Walrus / Drums and Truba
19) Benny and the Jets / Beastie Boys ft. Biz Markie
20) The Coffee and Tea Wrecks / The Dandy Warhols
21) Electric Music and the Summer People / Beck (hee)

Don't Forget
22) Me and Jesus Don't Talk Anymore / Beulah

So delightfully clever! And backed up by genuinely good music - what a combo. For sheer craftsmanship, it puts all the mixes I've ever made to utter shame
."

-and-

"The second mix from the generous derhay initially appeared to be an original vs. covers deal, but turned out to be just shared song titles. Simply titled Juke, the first 10 tracks are kinda commonly-named (but largely well-known) songs, and the following 10 are other versions of the same name but different make-up. Since with only a couple exceptions I like most of these songs, what I'll do instead of bolding my faves is bold the version of each that I prefer.
1) Strangers / Portishead
2) I'm Not in Love / Talking Heads
3) Change / Patty Griffin
4) You Are / Built to Spill
5) This Time / INXS
6) Clocks / Coldplay (I'm sorry, I still enjoy this song)
7) Bad Reputation / Joan Jett and the Blackhearts (hardly anything competes with this perfect classic)
8) Hold Me Now / Elastica
9) Easy / The Beta Band (I do like this song, however)
10) Rock and Roll / Led Zeppelin

11) Strangers / Puressence
12) I'm Not in Love / 10cc
13) Change / Blind Melon
14) You Are / Pearl Jam
15) This Time / The Verve (no disrespect to INXS, but I really like this song)
16) Clocks / The Casual Dots
17) Bad Reputation / Thin Lizzy
18) Hold Me Now / Thompson Twins (proof of my poor taste in music that I like this cheesy '80s ballad more than one by an actual good band like Elastica)
19) Easy / Faith No More (again, a straightforward cover of Lionel Ritchie over an acclaimed Scottish indie pop group? My music snob license is going to be revoked forever)
20) Rock and Roll / Velvet Underground"

October 2005

My first FTOTZ mix assignment was to the moderator, at the time, Azucar.

Her response was, with tracklist-
"I haven't been online too much in the past couple of days, so I didn't get a chance to post the mix I got from new kid derhay! It's untitled but it's got a lot of cool stuff. I'm especially glad that reggae is represented, as it seems to be the least appreciated genre around here for reasons I will never understand:

1) Iambic 5 Poetry- Tom Jenkinson
2) Judith- Heather Duby
3) Melting Pot- Underground Vegetables
4) Track 11- Cut Chemist/Noah- Bill Cosby/(A) Touch Sensitive- Super Furry Animals (All on one track! Weirdness!)
5) Yegelle Tezeta- Mubatu Astatke
6) Popsicles and Icicles- The Murmaids
7) Better Things- Massive Attack
8) For A Few Dollars More- The Upsetters
9) Coffee In A Pot- Supergrass
10) Power Move- The Chemical Brothers
11) It's My Delight- The Melodians
12) Saturday Night- Mos Def
13) My Guru- Bombay The Hard Way
14) Maddening Shroud- Frou Frou
15) Come On- The Rolling Stones
16) Getcho Soul Togetha, Pt. 2- Breakestra
17) Don't Hold Your Breath- Calla
18) Take Me Over- McKay
19) It's You Or No One- J.J. Johnson
20) Hayling (radio edit)- FC Kahuna

Thank you, derhay!"

Gimme Gimme Gimme

Well, I'll try and keep a running history of mix exchanges I've made with either Fame Tracker (FTOTZ) members, MySpacers, Art of the Mix(ers) (AotM) or mixes I've made for my wife.
