August/September 2008

Then: I look forward to the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack theme. Too much, actually. I have several mixes I'd like to do.

Now: I was able to narrow my selection to Surly Booty, and this was her posted response;

"I received two amazing mixes from derhay.

The first:
Joker and Harley Quinn - complete details
(the next obvious step for the Batman franchise)
1 Gang Of Four : What We All Want
2 Alexis Fleisig : Don't Ruin Me Gorgeous
3 David Byrne : Wicked Little Doll
4 The Slits : Shoplifting
5 Portishead : Hunter
6 The Stone Roses : I Wanna Be Adored
7 The Breeders : New Year
8 Spalding Rockwell : Vicious
9 Hans Zimmer & James Newton Howard : Introduce a Little Anarchy
10 Yeah Yeah Yeahs : Date with a Night
11 Fad Gadget : Collapsing New People
12 The Twilight Sad : Talking With Fireworks
13 The Futureheads : Stupid And Shallow
14 Nouvelle Vague : Just Can't Get Enough
15 The The : Dogs of Lust
16 Elbow : Grounds for Divorce
17 Infadels : Topboy
18 David Bowie : Cactus
19 The Birthday Party : Happy Birthday
20 The Black Angels : Black Grease
21 Easy Star All-Stars : Karma Police
22 Siouxsie & the Banshees : Dizzy

Here is his Mixtape Collective detailed track listing, which has so much scene by scene detail. You must check it out. I don't see your casting list there, so that's my own personal bonus. I've been waiting for Tom Waits and Peter Dinklage to share the big screen.

It's a fabulous mix, very dark and unhinged, lunacy abounds. I didn't bother to bold individual songs because it doesn't matter. The whole thing is perfect, no matter what I thought of any one song.

The second:
High Fidelity, a retracking of the original soundtrack.
1 The Third Bardo : I Can Understand Your Problem
2 Throwing Muses : Not Too Soon
3 Oingo Boingo : Who Do You Want To Be
4 The Melodians : It's My Delight
5 Mary Perrin : Dedication
6 Voice of the Beehive : Beat of Love
7 Michael J. Sheehy : Pigboy
8 Red House Painters : Mistress (Piano Version)
9 The Herbaliser : Gadget Funk
10 Supergrass : Sofa (Of My Lethargy)
11 Shuggie Otis : Funky Thithiee
12 Built to Spill : Center of the Universe
13 Bill Lloyd : Picture Book
14 The Gaylettes : Groovin'
15 Kim Fowley : Motorboat
16 Iggy Pop : Chains
17 Prince Buster : Sit and Wonder
18 Brian Eno : Cindy Tells Me
19 Smog : I Feel Like The Mother Of The World
20 The Velvet Underground : Rock and Roll (full-length version)
21 The Meters : Darling Darling Darling
22 Jay Mitchell : Tighter and Tighter
23 The Chocolate Watchband : Let's Talk About Girls

Detailed track listing.

A lot of fun, and another sum total of perfection. If I were to bold anything, I'd give a special nod to the Voice of the Beehive and the Bill Lloyd tracks. This version seems a bit warmer and flirtier than the real soundtrack (which I like, but kinda feels like a music nerd hipster wading through his cool record collection (which I understand is the point)). Kudos and thanks!"

"music nerd hipster" - guilty as charged

---------------------------------- cut along here

Cassie sent me the soundtrack to
The Long Haul "a movie about four friends who, in their youth, pledged to take an epic trip together in the distant future. When the time comes, they are all in very different places in their lives, but agree to reunite. So this is a soundtrack for four friends on the road, with an undercurrent of melancholy."

01. "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right" - Bob Dylan
02. "How Can I Love You If You Won't Lie Down" - Silver Jews
Best opening line I've heard in a while.
03. "Winter" - Dodos
I thought this was The Magnetic Fields. <3<3<3
04. "Challengers" - The New Pornographers
More!
05. "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover" - Paul Simon
06. "Handle With Care" - Jenny Lewsis with The Watson Twins
On paper this is amazing, but the chorus and too fast arrangement made it difficult to enjoy additional listens.
07. "Sweet Dandelion" - Peter Salett
Very, very nice.
08. "Tiger Mountain Pleasant Song" - Fleet Foxes
First time hearing a full ltrack, and not a sample. Lovely.
09. "The Boy with the Arab Strap" - Belle & Sebastian

10. "So Everyone" - Bonnie "Prince" Billy
<3
11. "California (All The Way)" - Luna
Such a great band and song.
12. "Citrus" - The Hold Steady
13. "Free" - Cat Power
My first crush on Chan started with "Free".
14. "Dragonflys" - Devandra Banhart
short and sweet
15. "Explain It To Me" - Liz Phair
I love this track too.
16. "Pagan Angel And A Borrowed Car" - Iron & Wine
ty
17. "Crosses" - José González
18. "Best Bit" - Beth Orton
I need to hear her more recent material.
19. "The Orchids" - Califone
20. "For Emma" - Bon Iver
Yay!
21. "I Lost Something In The Hills" - Sibylee Baier

22. "Our Way To Fall" - Yo La Tango
Again, More! Very strikingly beautiful.

I became very caught up with the narrative of relationship woes, from the lyrics, and the wonderful, wonderful music. It seemed Hal Ashby-esque to me, and I thank you for your mix.

Sorry about your printer

I may use Fleet Foxes' song for an upcoming mix. This mix introduced me to Devendra, also. I have since listened to "Lover" and "Lazy Butterfly" quite a bit. Looking for more...

July 2008

In July, I sent two mixes to rekkidbraka...
This was her posted response;

"Woot woot woot! Sent my mix off today...

In other news, I've finished digging the swank two-CD set from derhay and tracklistings are as follows. All the songs on both were super but bolded things were just super DUPER, which is really saying something because it was, to quote many hip-hop artists in the past decade, all good.

Siouxsie and the Banshees - Hong Kong Garden
Queens of the Stone Age - The Lost Art Of Keeping A Secret
Fleming & John - Ugly Girl
Man Man - Van Helsing Boombox
Garbage - Cherry Lips (Go Baby Go!)

Loons - Ne Sois Pas Si Bete
David Byrne - The Other Side Of This Life
The American Analog Set - Punk As Fuck I [heart] this title

Just what it says, BITCH. (No. Just kidding.)

Thanks again, derhay! I'm still all a-swoon over the awesomely artistic packaging... :-)"

Another new personal favorite
20 The Kinks "It's Too Late"

21 Belle and Sebastian "There's Too Much Love"
22 Langhorne Slim "I Love to Dance"

This was my introduction to The Submarines, beside being oblivious to their iTunes ad use. Honeysuckle Weeks is one of my favorite albums of 2008. These mixes opened me up to more poppy/radio friendly music. Thank you, thank you, MIKE ETERNITY.

June 2008

This is my "Sin" themed mix that I sent to mandalaya. This is her response...

And now I must report on derhay's supercool Spring Break 1899: Girls Gone Ingalls Wilder mix (ETA: which I see ChrissySissyStar also got as an orphan mix - now you won't have to post the tracklist, CSS :) ). I've bolded the early favorites, although I have a feeling that several more will grow on me. Most of the songs are delightfully and appropriately old-timey, with some fun exceptions.

1. She and Him - Magic Trick - an excellent song to sway to
2. Kiss - Getaway - rockin' the anachronism! The postcard of Kiss in concert was an awesome touch
3. The
Denver Gentlemen - Holiday
4. Kristin Hersh - Fly Around My Blue Eyed Girl
5. Shearwater -
Red Sea, Black Sea - funny how just a banjo can make an otherwise modern song sound traditional.
6.
Nashville Dulcimers - Keep On the Sunny Side - such a happy instrumental version of this song, almost a bold
7. Thee Headcoat Sect -
Cowboys Are Square - Garage Bands for Native Americans! This resonates at the moment because my Dutch housemate is currently in Arizona meeting up with her Lakota fresh-out-of-prison penpal and possible true love. This song makes me think of her and wish her luck.
8. Jesus Acosta & the Professionals - Guajido
9. Beck - Burro
10. Sue Keller - Hester on Parade (Charles Johnson, 1899) - ragtime pyeanny!
11. Casual Elvis - The Dateline Shuffle
12. Tom Waits - You Can Never Hold Back Spring - a good song and a lovely sentiment
13. Cerys Matthews -
Louisiana
14. Pride Tiger - The Lucky Ones - this makes me think of another upbeat song from the late 70s or early 80s, but I can't remember the name of it. Anyway, I like this AND it's got sentimental overtones
15. The Pogues - Streams of Whiskey - gotta love the Pogues
16. The Rolling Stones - Dead Flowers
17. Blood Feathers - Sea Legs - I like the whistling
18. Hem - The Beautiful Sea
19. The Black Keys - Psychotic Girl - funky yet old-timey! the power of the banjo again!
20. Van Halen - Could This Be Magic? - I had no idea Van Halen did acoustic classic blues, I like it for both the cachet of rockers doing blues and the music itself
21. The Vibrators - Whips and Furs
22. Adam and the Ants - Los Rancheros - not my favorite Adam/Ants song, but I still had to bold it. It also fits the theme very nicely.
23. Lez Zeppelin - Winter Sun - this will probably become a bold
24. Britta Phillips - I Am a Child
25. DeVotchKa - I Cried Like a Silly Boy
26. Murder By Death - Spring Break 1899

Steve Martin once made a joke that Nixon should have learned to play the banjo, and everyone would have forgiven him, because it's impossible to be sad while listening to banjo - this mix is a testament to that truth.

Note: I sent this mix, slightly altered, to ChrissySissyStar, as an Orphan Mix. Both recipients are from North Carolina. What is the universe (Cassie) trying to tell me?

My sin mix from Diane Court
The 10th Circle of Hell – Virgil’s Mix to Dante
Discovered in a pile of ruins at a European dig site, Time-Life’s “Ancient Mix Tapes, Vol. 455: The 1300’s” is proud to present this mix, to Dante from Virgil, commemorating their momentous trip down to hell, as chronicled in Dante’s Divine Comedy: Inferno. I was able to get Disc 1 back from my car stereo. Thank you for your time put into my mix. Loved it. I have plenty of new songs to chew on for the next month, thank you.

April 2008

For my mix to BlueJayWay, I tried my hand at spray painting stencils. I made a stencil of Jon Voight (below), with his name stenciled on it too. This was the image. I tried mixing things up with the packaging too, but all of this innovation cut my time considerably, and I have only been only sending only one mix per round. Here is the mix at mixtapecollective.org
I regret no scanning the final package, when I had finished it, but I wanted so much to send it on its merry way.

bluejayway wrote...

The CD has made its way from the car into the house! The mix is named after noted former car owner Jon Voight, and features neat stenciled cover art that rivals Ballroom Pink's great work. One problem -- the folded-up track listing is difficult to look at when one is listening to the CD while driving.

Frente! --- Open Your Heart and Let the Sunshine In
22-20's -- Devil in Me
Bauhaus -- Lagartija Nick
16 Horsepower -- Blessed Persistence
The Damned -- Ignite
Grant-Lee Phillips -- City of Refuge
Wanda Jackson -- Mean, Mean Man
Iggy Pop -- Some Weird Sin
Jarvis Cocker -- Fat Children
Shriekback -- Nemesis
Draco and the Malfoys -- 99 Death Eaters (I suppose I'd like this more if I had read a Harry Potter book or seen more than a few minutes here and there of the movies. They're no Weird Al, that's for sure.)
LaVice and Company - Thoughs Were the Days (Not an All in the Family cover, sadly)
The New Mastersounds -- Idle Time (Lack of Afro Remix)
Slim Cessna's Auto Club -- Last Song About Satan
The Dirtbombs -- No Expectations
Faultline, Brian Molko and Francoise Hardy -- Requiem for a Jerk
Neko Case -- Hold On, Hold On (The only song I already had)
Richard Thompson -- Dad's Gonna Kill Me
Murder By Death -- Rum Brave
Bobby Johnston -- The Beach
Toy Dolls -- The Devil Went Down to Scunthorpe (Dude, don't try to overcompensate for the fact that you're not cool enough to have a fiddle player in your band.)
Betty Wright -- Shoorah Shoorah

Sadly the last 2 songs didn't work! My CD player went crazy a second or so and I had to skip to the next disc in the changer. So for me, there's no:

Soundgarden -- One Minute of Silence
Man Man -- Fishstick Gumbo

which is too bad. But it's still a great mix! Thanks! (you didn't miss much, honestly)

My

April 2008 Mix by Adieu “a collection of new music, and some tracks I found while ripping old CDs to my computer. Hope you find a couple of gems!” Consider the mix cooper black bolded. Green text = gems.

18. Final Fantasy and Ed Droste "Possibly Maybe"

February 2008

I had recently finished The Time Traveler's Wife and prepared this mix, that I sent to knobbygirl...

I received an awesome laidback mix from derhay. It's a nostalgia mix based on the book "The Time Traveler's Wife" - which I had never even heard of, but I am definitely interested in picking it up now. The packaging is hands down the best I've ever gotten on a FTOTZ Mix - it's got a cover sleeve and a beautifully printed booklet.

Thanks, derhay - you obviously spent a lot of time on it!

Here is the mix at mixtapecollective.org

----------------------------

This was my "Nostalgia" themed mix from ihavecooties...

This song could have been called What Homework?: When MTV Was All I Knew

Hearing these songs took me back and I panicked when I couldn't remember my locker combination. Great mix. Songs I wouldn't seek out are given relevance, some weight even, by simply being tracked together with other terrific gems.

[mix bold]
1. Joan Jett and the BlackHearts "I Hate Myself for Loving You" Love Joan. I listened to a lot of The Runaways so I'd have more to talk about for imaginary conversations I wanted to have with Juno.
2. Mötley Crǖe "Dr. Feelgood" Great driving through
Wyoming music.
3. Salt-N-Pepa "Push It" I always felt like the DJs were putting one over on the school chaperones when they always played this song at dances.
4. Sea+Si Music Factory "Gonna Make You Sweat" MUSIC IS MY LIFE! For me too, but why is she yelling?
5. Poison "Your Mama Don't Dance" Some have Second Life, some have VH1.
6. Mad Donna "Like A Prayer"
black bra undulation
7. Chicago "Look Away" I don't want you to see me this way. Look derhay, baby, look derhay.
8. Jackyl Jackson "Rhythm Nation" I still have my cassette single of this. Did anyone else try and find cool ways to upgrade all black baseball caps after seeing the vid? Only me? Ok.
9. Def and Balding Leppard "Pour Some Sugar On Me" David Debauchery of seX-Files
10. New Kids "You Got It (The Right Stuff)" One of the very few bands to perform at BYU's
Marriott Center. I didn't attend. I did discover that a lot (most?) of the NKotB bed sheets ended up in Cabo Verde, West Africa. Everyone in Cabo has family in Boston, so it wasn't a huge surprise to see so many New Kids shirts on little kids and old ladies.
11.
"Fly To The Angels" Every mix my good friend and locker partner of four years ever made had a Slaughter track on it. Wow. I needed to hear this again, ty.
12. Robert Van Winkle "Ice Ice Baby" I'd bet good money that a friend of mine still knows all of the lyrics to this one. TGFVH1.
13. Bon Jovi "Lay Your Hands on Me" Bossy isn't he? The alter o' John Francis Bongiovi, Jr.
14. Paulie Shore Abdul "Opposites Attract"
Damn you. Thank you.
15. Stubbly "Faith" dy. ty. dy.
16. Tiffany "Radio Romance" She performed on campus during my last year in college. That seemed weird to me. I didn't go. Still don't know if she sung "New Year's Day", or not.
17. "
Kokomo" Ok, I did see this performed by two of the Boys Beach, at the above mentioned Marriott Center. (M. Love and what's-his-name.)
18. Chris Gaines "Friends in Low Places" Another any dance staple. What a song.
[/mix bold]

I also received a handmade friendship bracelet and wonderful details on the history/meaningfulness of some songs. Thank you for your nostalgia mix.

--------------

These are the mixes I sent P.D. Noosh with his comments -

Hand Hand Fingers Thumbelina
1) Adult. -- Hand to Phone. This kicked insane amounts of ass. I might steal it for a mix I'm working on.
2) Johnny Otis - Willie and the Hand Jive
3) Siouxsie and the Banshees - Green Fingers
4) Pretenders - Thumbelina This seems like it would be a nice road trip song!
5) Death in Vegas - Hands Around My Throat
6) Robert Plant - 29 Palms. I haven't heard this song for yeeeeears. I love the chorus for some reason.
7) Pulp - Pink Glove
8) Morcheeba - In the Hands of the Gods. Love!
9) The Rollers - Knockin' at the Wrong Door
10) XTC - Knuckle Down
11) Peter Murphy - Crystal Wrists
12) The Stranglers - Get a Grip on Yourself
13) Emiliana Torrini - Fingertips
14) Cocteau Twins - I Wear Your Ring
15) The Traveling Wilburys - Handle With Care
16) The Bar-Kays - Soul Finger. Niiiiice. I really wanted to shake my booty for this one.
17) The English Beat - Hands Off, She's Mine
18) The Modern Lovers - I Wanna Sleep in Your Arms. Who knew punk could be so sweet?
19) The Detroit Cobras - Baby Let Me Hold Your Hands
20) The Dirtbombs - The Sharpest Claws
21) Reggie and the Full Effect - Gloves (feat. Fluxuation)
22) Steve Martin - Drop Thumb Medley. Banjos are fun!
23) The Smith- Death at One's Elbow
24) I Am Kloot - Over My Shoulder
25) Gladys Knight and the Pips - Take Me in Your Arms and Love Me. It occurred to me while listening to this that the only other Gladys Knight I know is "Midnight Train to Georgia" and "Love Overboard." I seriously need to remedy that sad situation.

The awesome cover art featured a collage of hands and fingers and starred Meg White as Thumbelina.

Sweatin' Through the Damn Babushka
1) Fanfare Ciocarilia - The Mission Impossible Theme(I think?) --nope 007 Theme
2) Cerys Matthews - Gypsy Song. I dug the vocals a lot -- think a huskier sounding Bjork.
3) Paul Cantelon - Odessa Medley
4) The Rolling Stones - Paint It Black. I made the mistake of singing this at karaoke on my birthday a few years ago only to discover this is one of the most depressing karaoke songs ever.
5) Cat Power - Up and Gone
6) Robert Plant and Allison Krauss - Fortune Teller
7) DeVotchKa - Venus in Furs. Creepy!
8) Goran Bregovic - Kustino Oro
9) Man Man - I, Manface. Seems like there was a lot of change and movement in this song.
10) The Legendary Pink Dots - Peek-A-Boo
11) Mary Timothy - Dr. Cat
12) Beirut - Brandenburg

13) Gogol Bordello - Start Wearing Purple
14) Vashti Bunyan - Lily Pond
15) The Denver Gentlemen - The Potter's Field Special
16) Marcia Griffiths - Gypsy Man
17) Madredeus - Os Moinhos
18) Super Furry Animals - Pan Ddaw'r Wawr. LOVE!
19) DeVotchKa - Death By Blonde
20) Van Morrison - Caravan
21) Gogol Borello - Through the Roof 'n' Underground

This one featured an awesome cover image of the little girl from that hilarious MST3K with the carnivorous tree house, the witch lady, and Santa Claus (I think?)

Thanks a ton, derhay!

At her request, I sent this mix to Cassie. She posted this:

I was lucky enough to receive derhay's gypsy-themed mix in an EC trade, and I've been enjoying it all weekend. It's precisely the sort of concept mix I wish I could pull off. And it promotes all sorts of romantic feelings to get out there and travel around Eastern Europe. The flow of the whole thing was excellent but the Venus in Furs cover by DeVotchKa was a particular standout.

Thanks derhay!

You are welcome.

I sent these mixes to souphead and here are his comments -

Wow...thats all I can say..well, i can say alot of things but gosh, i'm sure no one is listening.
I have been the recipient of a rather awesome mix by derhay! I have been lax in reporting the listings and I am here to correct all ills with my mixclub performance. I have sent off a late mix to..well..you probably know already since you're still waiting for it.
Back to derhay's mix(s)! Its a double dose of pure musical fun from the Dec round!
The first one is entitled
The Mercury Hurst Talent Show - 1964 Director's Cut
this is how it goes:

1. Spoon - The Underdog
2. Throwing Muses - Buzz (More than a cola!)
3. Lil' Fighters - The Recoys (Kinda like the kinks with girls)
4. I Am Kloot - The Stars Look Familiar (klootastic!)
5. The Casual Dots - She's The Real Thing
6. Of Montreal - One Of A Very Few Kind (ha! nice, very oooold school)

15. Keren Ann - Roses & Hips (is she really that white?)*
16. The Natural History - Dance Steps
17. April March - While We're Young ( This will sound odd but this reminds me of when I was on strike and there was a woman singing a song who had this same voice! crazy...)
18. The Walkmen - There Goes My Baby (I like the moodiness of this, sombre)
19. Lisa Germano - Stars (sweet guitars)
20. Mazarin - Another One Goes By (It's like the smiths with band of horses!)
21. Interpol - C'mere (Sometimes I like these cats, sometimes not. But I like this one!)
22. 5.6.7.8's - Jane In The Jungle (wayyyyy to cute)

25. TV on The Radio - Mr. Grieves
26. Supergrass - Time To Go
27. Kirby Grips - Hanging On The Telephone (Whatever happened to these gals?)

And thats the end of the first CD! an ode to the sociological side of humans!
If I may be so bold as to include how wonderful the cover and tracklistings are! very classy san diego!
* (note, there was a link to a website for which the tunes were posted with small stories about each song. dang, you cats are crafty. but this tune had a note that said
QUOTE
Dutch Israeli, Keren Ann won over T.B. Player with her voice, but he had secretly wished that she was, uhm, tanner

ha ha!)

but let me get to the next of the fantastic duo!
It's entitled: Just Add Car Chase with what I precieve to be either a '67chevy impala or a '71 nova or monte carlo on the cover. What? my glasses are dirty! I do believe the songs follow how a car chase might play out!
here we go!

1. 13th Floor Elevators - You're Gonna Miss me (Holy Crap! Its the tune from High Fidelity. In that context it can fit on the first mix too! ha! but for this context, this is just the beginning of it all...)
2. The DirtBombs - F.I.D.O (let's rip it up!)
3. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Heavy Metal (think about what you've just done..)
4. Ebony Rhythm Band - Drugs Ain't Cool (just go! awesome car chase music! geez, I want to see some kinda cross between Space 1999 and Starsky And Hutch!)
5. Janes' Addiction - Hypersonic
6. The VLA - When I Am Through With You (another great tune to be playing in the background when you're outrunning life!)
7. Mr. Scruff - Champion Nibble (ok, now I'm lowridin' down the strip!)
8. Atomic Bitchwax - The Passenger (Whoa, that voice tuner thingy is wonky!)
9. The Mission - Love Me two Times (jim morrison is peeing his pants in the seat next to you!...oh wait...he does that on command...)
10. DJ Crush - Beyond Raging Waves (This would be when you think all is ok but you keep sneaking looks in the rear view mirror)
11. UNKLE - Burn My Shadow (uh oh..whoever you thought you lost just caught up with you!)
12. Dozer - Rising (you just got away again after gunnin' em' down!)
13. A Pocketful Of Deng - No Such Potion (shouldn't have "gunned")
14. Robert Plant & the New Sensation - Tin Pan Alley (he's now officially a music whore)
15. The New Mastersounds - Bondo Sama (haa! my name is bond...julio bond..)
16. Slade - Run Runaway (whoa...slade!? geezus! I got KROK on the radio!)
17. Primal Scream - Blood Money (The car chase wears one down while the sun heats up the black interior)
18. Death In Vegas - Dirge (is that the sound of the water pump blowing?)
19. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Mercy (the car slows...)
20. Jorge Ben - Take It Easy (it's ok, we will ride again one day soon!)

man, that was a really fun CD! Thanks Derhay! i like the feel of it! I had my own story line to it so I hoped it linked up to the real feel of the theme!

woo hoo!

thank you very muchly Derhay!
