Weird Turn Pro

For an FTOTZ themed mix, I was given the option to choose one response from three different "favorite" questions, from the mixee, as the theme.

TIME OF DAY:

4:30 pm aka quittin' time

CHILDHOOD AMBITION:

A bionic, crime fighting brain surgeon

21. “Out-Side” The Beta Band

I found some Office Max adhesive CD sleeves, intended for manila folders, that I use now for sending out mixes . I printed this image on card stock, with the sleeve attached to the back. The track listing was visible through the clear plastic sleeve. I rounded the corners and tried to make it look more like an iTunes gift card. The mix was well received, with tracks 2, 7, 8, 12, 16, 18 and 20 marked as most liked/enjoyed.

Most of these were songs that I had been listening to quite a bit.2, 4, 8-10 and 17. I found the image of the silhouette and antlers online and designed the rest, complete with UPC barcode and numbers. The tracks were listed as one paragraph under TERMS AND CONDITIONS. This is a mix I can listen to in the car, at work, walking and with my family.

August/September 2008

Then: I look forward to the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack theme. Too much, actually. I have several mixes I'd like to do.

Now: I was able to narrow my selection to Surly Booty, and this was her posted response;

"I received two amazing mixes from derhay.

The first:
Joker and Harley Quinn - complete details
(the next obvious step for the Batman franchise)
1 Gang Of Four : What We All Want
2 Alexis Fleisig : Don't Ruin Me Gorgeous
3 David Byrne : Wicked Little Doll
4 The Slits : Shoplifting
5 Portishead : Hunter
6 The Stone Roses : I Wanna Be Adored
7 The Breeders : New Year
8 Spalding Rockwell : Vicious
9 Hans Zimmer & James Newton Howard : Introduce a Little Anarchy
10 Yeah Yeah Yeahs : Date with a Night
11 Fad Gadget : Collapsing New People
12 The Twilight Sad : Talking With Fireworks
13 The Futureheads : Stupid And Shallow
14 Nouvelle Vague : Just Can't Get Enough
15 The The : Dogs of Lust

18 David Bowie : Cactus
19 The Birthday Party : Happy Birthday
20 The Black Angels : Black Grease
21 Easy Star All-Stars : Karma Police
22 Siouxsie & the Banshees : Dizzy

Here is his Mixtape Collective detailed track listing, which has so much scene by scene detail. You must check it out. I don't see your casting list there, so that's my own personal bonus. I've been waiting for Tom Waits and Peter Dinklage to share the big screen.

It's a fabulous mix, very dark and unhinged, lunacy abounds. I didn't bother to bold individual songs because it doesn't matter. The whole thing is perfect, no matter what I thought of any one song.

The second:
High Fidelity, a retracking of the original soundtrack.
1 The Third Bardo : I Can Understand Your Problem
2 Throwing Muses : Not Too Soon
3 Oingo Boingo : Who Do You Want To Be
4 The Melodians : It's My Delight
5 Mary Perrin : Dedication
6 Voice of the Beehive : Beat of Love
7 Michael J. Sheehy : Pigboy
8 Red House Painters : Mistress (Piano Version)
9 The Herbaliser : Gadget Funk
10 Supergrass : Sofa (Of My Lethargy)
11 Shuggie Otis : Funky Thithiee
12 Built to Spill : Center of the Universe
13 Bill Lloyd : Picture Book
14 The Gaylettes : Groovin'
15 Kim Fowley : Motorboat
16 Iggy Pop : Chains
17 Prince Buster : Sit and Wonder
18 Brian Eno : Cindy Tells Me
19 Smog : I Feel Like The Mother Of The World
20 The Velvet Underground : Rock and Roll (full-length version)
21 The Meters : Darling Darling Darling
22 Jay Mitchell : Tighter and Tighter
23 The Chocolate Watchband : Let's Talk About Girls

Detailed track listing.

A lot of fun, and another sum total of perfection. If I were to bold anything, I'd give a special nod to the Voice of the Beehive and the Bill Lloyd tracks. This version seems a bit warmer and flirtier than the real soundtrack (which I like, but kinda feels like a music nerd hipster wading through his cool record collection (which I understand is the point)). Kudos and thanks!"

"music nerd hipster" - guilty as charged

---------------------------------- cut along here

Cassie sent me the soundtrack to
The Long Haul "a movie about four friends who, in their youth, pledged to take an epic trip together in the distant future. When the time comes, they are all in very different places in their lives, but agree to reunite. So this is a soundtrack for four friends on the road, with an undercurrent of melancholy."

01. "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right" - Bob Dylan
02. "How Can I Love You If You Won't Lie Down" - Silver Jews
Best opening line I've heard in a while.
03. "Winter" - Dodos
I thought this was The Magnetic Fields. <3<3<3
04. "Challengers" - The New Pornographers
More!
05. "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover" - Paul Simon
06. "Handle With Care" - Jenny Lewsis with The Watson Twins
On paper this is amazing, but the chorus and too fast arrangement made it difficult to enjoy additional listens.
07. "Sweet Dandelion" - Peter Salett
Very, very nice.
08. "Tiger Mountain Pleasant Song" - Fleet Foxes
First time hearing a full ltrack, and not a sample. Lovely.
09. "The Boy with the Arab Strap" - Belle & Sebastian

10. "So Everyone" - Bonnie "Prince" Billy
<3
11. "California (All The Way)" - Luna
Such a great band and song.
12. "Citrus" - The Hold Steady
13. "Free" - Cat Power
My first crush on Chan started with "Free".
14. "Dragonflys" - Devandra Banhart
short and sweet
15. "Explain It To Me" - Liz Phair
I love this track too.
16. "Pagan Angel And A Borrowed Car" - Iron & Wine
ty
17. "Crosses" - José González
18. "Best Bit" - Beth Orton
I need to hear her more recent material.
19. "The Orchids" - Califone
20. "For Emma" - Bon Iver
Yay!
21. "I Lost Something In The Hills" - Sibylee Baier

22. "Our Way To Fall" - Yo La Tango
Again, More! Very strikingly beautiful.

I became very caught up with the narrative of relationship woes, from the lyrics, and the wonderful, wonderful music. It seemed Hal Ashby-esque to me, and I thank you for your mix.

Sorry about your printer

I may use Fleet Foxes' song for an upcoming mix. This mix introduced me to Devendra, also. I have since listened to "Lover" and "Lazy Butterfly" quite a bit. Looking for more...

July 2008

In July, I sent two mixes to rekkidbraka...
This was her posted response;

"Woot woot woot! Sent my mix off today...

In other news, I've finished digging the swank two-CD set from derhay and tracklistings are as follows. All the songs on both were super but bolded things were just super DUPER, which is really saying something because it was, to quote many hip-hop artists in the past decade, all good.

Man Man - Van Helsing Boombox
Garbage - Cherry Lips (Go Baby Go!)

The Exciters - Tell Him
Yann Tiersen - Les Jours Tristes

Another new personal favorite
20 The Kinks "It's Too Late"

21 Belle and Sebastian "There's Too Much Love"
22 Langhorne Slim "I Love to Dance"

This was my introduction to The Submarines, beside being oblivious to their iTunes ad use. Honeysuckle Weeks is one of my favorite albums of 2008. These mixes opened me up to more poppy/radio friendly music. Thank you, thank you, MIKE ETERNITY.

June 2008

This is my "Sin" themed mix that I sent to mandalaya. This is her response...

And now I must report on derhay's supercool Spring Break 1899: Girls Gone Ingalls Wilder mix (ETA: which I see ChrissySissyStar also got as an orphan mix - now you won't have to post the tracklist, CSS :) ). I've bolded the early favorites, although I have a feeling that several more will grow on me. Most of the songs are delightfully and appropriately old-timey, with some fun exceptions.

1. She and Him - Magic Trick - an excellent song to sway to
2. Kiss - Getaway - rockin' the anachronism! The postcard of Kiss in concert was an awesome touch
3. The
Denver Gentlemen - Holiday
4. Kristin Hersh - Fly Around My Blue Eyed Girl
5. Shearwater -
Red Sea, Black Sea - funny how just a banjo can make an otherwise modern song sound traditional.
6.
Nashville Dulcimers - Keep On the Sunny Side - such a happy instrumental version of this song, almost a bold
7. Thee Headcoat Sect -
Cowboys Are Square - Garage Bands for Native Americans! This resonates at the moment because my Dutch housemate is currently in Arizona meeting up with her Lakota fresh-out-of-prison penpal and possible true love. This song makes me think of her and wish her luck.
8. Jesus Acosta & the Professionals - Guajido
9. Beck - Burro
10. Sue Keller - Hester on Parade (Charles Johnson, 1899) - ragtime pyeanny!
11. Casual Elvis - The Dateline Shuffle
12. Tom Waits - You Can Never Hold Back Spring - a good song and a lovely sentiment
13. Cerys Matthews -
Louisiana
14. Pride Tiger - The Lucky Ones - this makes me think of another upbeat song from the late 70s or early 80s, but I can't remember the name of it. Anyway, I like this AND it's got sentimental overtones
15. The Pogues - Streams of Whiskey - gotta love the Pogues
16. The Rolling Stones - Dead Flowers
17. Blood Feathers - Sea Legs - I like the whistling
18. Hem - The Beautiful Sea
19. The Black Keys - Psychotic Girl - funky yet old-timey! the power of the banjo again!
20. Van Halen - Could This Be Magic? - I had no idea Van Halen did acoustic classic blues, I like it for both the cachet of rockers doing blues and the music itself
21. The Vibrators - Whips and Furs
22. Adam and the Ants - Los Rancheros - not my favorite Adam/Ants song, but I still had to bold it. It also fits the theme very nicely.
23. Lez Zeppelin - Winter Sun - this will probably become a bold
24. Britta Phillips - I Am a Child
25. DeVotchKa - I Cried Like a Silly Boy
26. Murder By Death - Spring Break 1899

Steve Martin once made a joke that Nixon should have learned to play the banjo, and everyone would have forgiven him, because it's impossible to be sad while listening to banjo - this mix is a testament to that truth.

Note: I sent this mix, slightly altered, to ChrissySissyStar, as an Orphan Mix. Both recipients are from North Carolina. What is the universe (Cassie) trying to tell me?

My sin mix from Diane Court
The 10th Circle of Hell – Virgil’s Mix to Dante
Discovered in a pile of ruins at a European dig site, Time-Life’s “Ancient Mix Tapes, Vol. 455: The 1300’s” is proud to present this mix, to Dante from Virgil, commemorating their momentous trip down to hell, as chronicled in Dante’s Divine Comedy: Inferno. I was able to get Disc 1 back from my car stereo. Thank you for your time put into my mix. Loved it. I have plenty of new songs to chew on for the next month, thank you.

April 2008

For my mix to BlueJayWay, I tried my hand at spray painting stencils. I made a stencil of Jon Voight (below), with his name stenciled on it too. This was the image. I tried mixing things up with the packaging too, but all of this innovation cut my time considerably, and I have only been only sending only one mix per round. Here is the mix at mixtapecollective.org
I regret no scanning the final package, when I had finished it, but I wanted so much to send it on its merry way.

bluejayway wrote...

The CD has made its way from the car into the house! The mix is named after noted former car owner Jon Voight, and features neat stenciled cover art that rivals Ballroom Pink's great work. One problem -- the folded-up track listing is difficult to look at when one is listening to the CD while driving.

Frente! --- Open Your Heart and Let the Sunshine In
22-20's -- Devil in Me
Bauhaus -- Lagartija Nick
16 Horsepower -- Blessed Persistence
The Damned -- Ignite
Grant-Lee Phillips -- City of Refuge
Wanda Jackson -- Mean, Mean Man
Iggy Pop -- Some Weird Sin
Jarvis Cocker -- Fat Children
Shriekback -- Nemesis
Draco and the Malfoys -- 99 Death Eaters (I suppose I'd like this more if I had read a Harry Potter book or seen more than a few minutes here and there of the movies. They're no Weird Al, that's for sure.)
LaVice and Company - Thoughs Were the Days (Not an All in the Family cover, sadly)
The New Mastersounds -- Idle Time (Lack of Afro Remix)
Slim Cessna's Auto Club -- Last Song About Satan
The Dirtbombs -- No Expectations
Faultline, Brian Molko and Francoise Hardy -- Requiem for a Jerk
Neko Case -- Hold On, Hold On (The only song I already had)
Richard Thompson -- Dad's Gonna Kill Me
Murder By Death -- Rum Brave
Bobby Johnston -- The Beach
Toy Dolls -- The Devil Went Down to Scunthorpe (Dude, don't try to overcompensate for the fact that you're not cool enough to have a fiddle player in your band.)
Betty Wright -- Shoorah Shoorah

Sadly the last 2 songs didn't work! My CD player went crazy a second or so and I had to skip to the next disc in the changer. So for me, there's no:

Soundgarden -- One Minute of Silence
Man Man -- Fishstick Gumbo

which is too bad. But it's still a great mix! Thanks! (you didn't miss much, honestly)
